Segami, a former mechanical engineer turned artist, is known as the foremost practitioner of the nearly lost 2,000 year-old art form Suminagashi, which translates from Japanese as “flowing ink.” She revived the ancient black and white art and transformed it into her own colorful contemporary medium. Using her background in fluid dynamics, she pushed the technological boundaries of laying pigments on water to develop her own techniques resulting in one-of-a-kind, multi-dimensional pieces that must be seen in person.
As Segami put it, “Painting On Water™ is an expression of complementaries instead of opposites: like Eastern and Western philosophies, science and art, and parallels such as control and letting go,”. Moreover, it is also about seizing the moment, as in life. In order to capture a certain image, the paper must be laid down at the precise moment the opportunity is seen.”
Along with the exhibition, Segami will present a few sessions – educational and inspirational – that will include the history, background, philosophy, and timeless applications of the principles of Contemporary Suminagashi. She will share her journey of how she took her vision and made it a reality: including the inevitable missteps and tribulations of being an entrepreneur. Participants in these sessions will gain insights into this rare art form and appreciate how to apply the principles of Contemporary Suminagashi to business, life, love, and more. Sign up to receive the updates of the schedule.
“The Future of The Past – an inspired retrospective that looks forward – in the work, the artist and emerging technology.” Segami invites, “everyone to be an active participant, both in looking at the art and looking at their own life. Spend time with each painting and ask yourself what you see and how you relate to the image. Your perspective, your ability to recognize the images and patterns make your interpretation of time and how ‘thing’ becomes another.”
“More than two decades ago, my first-ever Suminagashi exhibit was held on the North Shore of Chicago. Since then I have had the privilege of introducing Painting On Water™ to people around the world. Now I am back in Chicago to debut the next phrase of my work.”
Segami is a Chinese-born American with degrees in mechanical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology. As well as an artist and entrepreneur, she is the founder, executive producer and curator of TEDxIIT, the longest running independently organized TED event in Chicago. Recognized as a Mandarin Leader, she speaks on the topic of innovation leadership. She has received many honors for her extraordinary ability to create an innovative way to bridge art and science.
